Mumbai Indians Achieve Historic Chase in WPL Showdown
The Mumbai Indians (MI) secured the second-highest successful chase in Women’s Premier League (WPL) history on March 5, 2025, by successfully chasing down a target of 193 runs against the Gujarat Giants (GG) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The reigning champions achieved this remarkable feat with four balls to spare, largely due to a stellar performance from their captain, Harmanpreet Kaur.
This victory puts MI in a strong position as they continue to demonstrate their prowess in the league. The highest successful chase in WPL remains with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who famously chased down a target of 202 runs against the same Gujarat Giants in the tournament’s 2025 opener held in Vadodara.
In that match, RCB’s success was powered by notable contributions from Ellyse Perry, who scored 57 runs off 34 balls, and Richa Ghosh, who added a swift 64 runs from just 27 deliveries. Their efforts allowed RCB to win the match comfortably with nine balls and six wickets in hand, despite both openers failing to score significantly.
Harmanpreet’s performance against GG was nothing short of exceptional. She scored an unbeaten 71 runs off 43 balls. Her innings included two crucial partnerships that were vital for MI’s success. She first formed a 72-run partnership with Amanjot Kaur, who contributed 40 runs off 26 balls. Following that, Harmanpreet combined with Nicola Carey for an unbroken 84-run stand, with Carey finishing on 38 runs off 23 balls.
MI’s successful chase of 193 runs positions them as a formidable force in the league, while also highlighting Harmanpreet’s leadership and batting skills. Their previous chase of 191 runs against the Gujarat Giants in the 2024 WPL also showcased Harmanpreet’s capabilities, as she scored a career-best 95 not out off 48 balls, leading her team to victory with just one ball remaining.
In both matches against the Gujarat Giants, MI has shown their resilience and fighting spirit, making them a team to watch in the ongoing tournament. As the WPL continues, fans can expect more thrilling encounters and record-breaking performances from the league’s top teams.
