MCG Curator Takes Responsibility After Ashes Test Ends in Two Days

The fourth Test of the Ashes Series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) concluded in a surprising two days, prompting significant criticism regarding the pitch conditions. Matt Page, the curator of the MCG, expressed his astonishment after witnessing a remarkable 20 wickets fall on the first day of play.

“I was in a state of shock after the first day, to see everything that happened, 20 wickets in a day,” Page stated. He added, “I’ve never been involved in a Test match like it, and hopefully will never be involved in a Test match like it again.”

Page acknowledged the responsibility for the pitch’s performance, emphasizing the need for a captivating contest between bat and ball. “Every year is different and the margins are very small, but in the back of your mind, you’re always trying to provide that contest,” he explained. The goal is to ensure that Test cricket remains engaging, ideally lasting four or five days.

Following the rapid conclusion of the match, Page took ownership of the situation, stating, “We’ve produced a Test that’s been captivating, but it hasn’t gone long enough, and we’ll take ownership of that. We’ll learn from it, we’ll grow, and we’ll make sure that we’ll get it right next year.”

He further elaborated on the challenges faced at the MCG, noting that a lack of seam movement can lead to a flat playing surface. “If we don’t have seam movement here at the MCG, we become very dull, very lifeless and very flat, which is no good for the players, no good for the spectators, and no good for the game,” Page said.

Australia lost the fourth Test but had already secured the series after winning the first three matches. England’s player Ben Stokes also voiced his discontent with the pitch conditions, suggesting that the situation could have escalated significantly had the match continued in such a manner.
