Lamar Jackson Doubtful for Crucial Match Against Packers
The Baltimore Ravens face a daunting challenge this Saturday as they prepare for a must-win game against the Green Bay Packers, potentially without their star quarterback, Lamar Jackson. Jackson is listed as doubtful due to a back contusion that kept him from practicing all week, a condition that also sidelined him during last Sunday’s defeat to the New England Patriots. With a current record of 7-8, the Ravens risk elimination from playoff contention if they lose in Green Bay.
Should Jackson be unable to play, the Ravens will rely on backup quarterback Tyler Huntley to lead the team. The Ravens have struggled without Jackson, holding a record of just 5-12 since 2018 in games where he did not start. However, Huntley did guide the team to victory against the NFC North-leading Chicago Bears earlier this season in his only start, a 30-16 win on October 26, 2023.
Huntley is focused on the immediate challenge ahead. “A lot of our games have been must-win, and every week we must win, so we have to focus on going 1-0 this week,” he stated. “If we’re doing everything that we need to do, we’ll get that.”
The Ravens have historically demonstrated a significant drop in scoring when Jackson is not at the helm. With Jackson as the starting quarterback, the team’s record stands at 79-35, including playoffs, with an impressive average of 27.7 points per game. In contrast, without him, that average plummets to just 16.2 points. This stark difference highlights the impact of Jackson’s absence on the team’s overall performance.
Running back Derrick Henry praised Huntley’s preparation and attitude, saying, “He goes out like he’s the starter. He practices that way, and he prepares that way. So yes, if ‘Snoop’ [Huntley] is going to go out there, he’s going to roll and do what he has to do.”
Beyond his physical injury, Jackson is currently navigating scrutiny regarding his work ethic and relationship with head coach John Harbaugh. A report from the Baltimore Sun alleged that Jackson had fallen asleep in team meetings, which Harbaugh dismissed as unfounded. “I don’t give any credence to anonymous sources and have never seen that type of behavior from Jackson,” Harbaugh asserted.
He added, “Our relationship is A-plus. I love him. Always have, always will. And I know he’s fighting like crazy to get back.” The report also suggested that Jackson has been given preferential treatment, including later practice times to accommodate his schedule.
As the Ravens prepare for this critical game, the stakes are high, and the team’s chances of postseason success hinge on the health and performance of their star quarterback. With the clock ticking down to kickoff, all eyes will be on Baltimore to see how they respond in Jackson’s potential absence.
