Jon Rahm Shares Experience of Ryder Cup Insults at Bethpage
Jon Rahm recently opened up about his experience during the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, revealing that he faced significant hostility from the crowd. The Spanish golfer, along with his European teammates, successfully defended the Ryder Cup against Team USA, but it was far from an easy task due to the intense atmosphere.
During a candid discussion on the 300th episode of GOLF’s Subpar Podcast, hosted by Colt Knost and Drew Stolz, Rahm recounted the insults he endured. Among these, he recalled being labeled a “terrorist” by a spectator. This moment highlighted the challenging environment faced by Team Europe throughout the three-day competition.
In the podcast, Rahm addressed various topics, including the departure of Brooks Koepka from LIV Golf and the implications for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points. His reflections on the Ryder Cup experience were particularly striking, as he noted the chaotic atmosphere that permeated the event.
Insights from the Ryder Cup
Rahm shared that the experience was not only difficult for him but for all the European players involved. He emphasized how the hostile crowd made it challenging to focus. “It was a tough week and some ‘inhospitable’ things took place,” he stated, referencing the intensity of the fans’ reactions.
In a separate interview with RTVE, Rahm compared the situation to soccer, where the noise of a large crowd often drowns out individual voices. However, he pointed out that at Bethpage, he could hear the specific words directed at him. This level of engagement from the audience added a unique, albeit uncomfortable, dimension to the competition.
As Rahm prepares for his upcoming events, including the 2025 Ryder Cup, he reflects on the lessons learned from this year’s experience. Recently, at the 2025 Open de España in Madrid, he expressed optimism about reclaiming his title. The two-time major champion is eager to build on his past performances while navigating the challenges that come with such high-stakes tournaments.
Rahm’s experience at the Ryder Cup serves as a reminder of the intense pressures athletes face while competing on the world stage. As he continues to engage with fans and media, his insights provide a glimpse into the realities of professional golf, especially in a setting as charged as Bethpage Black.
