Japan Thrashes India 11-0 in AFC Women’s Asian Cup Match
In a stunning display of dominance, Japan defeated India 11-0 in their second Group C match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 on March 7, 2026. The match, held at the Perth Rectangular Stadium, highlighted the vast disparity in skill and experience between the two teams, with Japan ranked eighth in the world and India at 67th.
From the outset, Japan’s prowess was evident. The scoring frenzy began in the fourth minute when Yuzuki Yamamoto skillfully maneuvered past India’s defense and curled a left-footed shot into the top corner. By the 20th minute, Japan had already increased their lead to three goals, with contributions from captain Yui Hasegawa and Hinata Miyazawa. Despite India’s head coach Amelia Valverde deploying a defensive 5-4-1 formation, the strategy proved ineffective against Japan’s relentless attack.
Japan maintained nearly 80% possession throughout the match, leaving Indian striker Manisha Kalyan isolated. The Indian midfield struggled to make meaningful connections, often unable to string together more than two passes. Just before halftime, Kiko Seike converted a penalty, sending India into the locker room trailing 5-0. The scoreline could have been even more severe if not for several crucial saves by goalkeeper Panthoi Chanu.
The second half saw Japan continue their offensive onslaught. The introduction of Riko Ueki changed the dynamics dramatically. She scored her first goal just two minutes after coming on and completed a hat-trick within 18 minutes. The Japanese side’s movement was fluid and relentless, netting six goals in the second half. Notably, Hinata Miyazawa added her own hat-trick in the 81st minute, further solidifying Japan’s dominance.
The final score of 11-0 marked India’s heaviest defeat in over twenty years, leaving them at the bottom of Group C with zero points and a troubling goal difference of -12. Despite this disheartening result, the tournament format allows for a glimmer of hope. India could still advance to the quarter-finals if they manage a convincing victory over Chinese Taipei in their final group match on March 10, 2026.
This match serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Indian women’s football on the international stage. While the defeat was significant, it also presents an opportunity for growth and improvement as the team prepares for their next challenge.
