On **January 26, 2024**, India’s **Him Yodha** contingent made a striking appearance during the **Republic Day Parade** along **Kartavya Path** in New Delhi. This unique formation features a variety of animals including **Bactrian camels**, **Zanskar ponies**, and **Black Kites**, alongside advanced **Glacier ATVs** and indigenous dog breeds. These animals and vehicles play crucial roles in supporting soldiers stationed in some of the world’s most challenging terrains, particularly in the **Himalayas** and the **Siachen Glacier**.

Captain **Harshita Raghav** led the contingent, which is guided by the principle of **“VASUDHAIV KUTUMBKAM,”** meaning “the world is one family.” The Bactrian camels, known for their resilience, carried supplies at altitudes exceeding **15,000 feet**, showcasing their vital logistical capabilities.

According to the official statement, “Inducted for high-altitude transport, these hardy animals thrive above 15,000 feet, requiring minimal care while carrying loads up to **200 kilograms**.” They are indispensable in sandy terrains and steep gradients, making them essential for operations along the **Line of Actual Control**.

Indigenous Animals Highlighted

For the first time, the **Zanskar ponies** marched on Kartavya Path, symbolizing courage and endurance. These ponies operate in the harsh conditions of the **Siachen Glacier** and the **Line of Actual Control**, where they carry supplies and assist in border patrols. The statement noted, “For the first time, an endangered breed marches on Kartavya Path, their hooves echoing courage, sacrifice, and pride.”

The contingent also displayed **Glacier ATVs**, rugged snowmobiles essential for logistics in the world’s highest battlefield. Equipped with twin sledges and a carrying capacity of up to **200 kilograms**, these vehicles are pivotal for transporting supplies and evacuating casualties under extreme conditions.

Five indigenous Army dogs, including the **Mudhol Hound**, **Rampur Hound**, **Chippiparai**, **Kombai**, and **Rajapalayam**, accompanied the contingent. The dogs are trained for attack and patrol missions, now serving alongside recognized foreign breeds. “Equipped with bullet-resistant jackets, cameras, GPS, radios, and advanced surveillance systems, these modern Army Dogs are true force multipliers in the field,” the statement emphasized.

Mixed Scouts Contingent Follows

Following the Him Yodha contingent was the **Mixed Scouts** contingent, composed of personnel from various elite Infantry units including **Sikkim Scouts**, **Arunachal Scouts**, **Kumaon Scouts**, **Ladakh Scouts**, **Garhwal Scouts**, and **Dogra Scouts**. Led by Lieutenant **Amit Choudhary** of the **2 Arunachal Scouts**, this group represents India’s specialized forces in high-altitude surveillance and reconnaissance.

Described as “sons of the soil,” these soldiers embody the spirit and resilience of the Himalayas, drawing inspiration from the region’s wildlife, including the **Himalayan ibex** and the **snow leopard**. Their disciplined march reflects the Army’s ethos of **‘Service Before Self’**, while their vigilance underscores the core values of the Scouts—alertness, adaptability, and unwavering commitment.

The Republic Day Parade not only highlights military capabilities but also pays tribute to the integral role that animals and indigenous personnel play in supporting national defense efforts. As the Him Yodha contingent and Mixed Scouts marched past the saluting base, they showcased the strength and unity of India’s armed forces, reinforcing their commitment to protecting the nation’s borders.
