Girona Stuns Barcelona, Tightens La Liga Title Race
Barcelona faced a significant setback on March 4, 2024, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Girona, leaving them two points behind Real Madrid in the La Liga standings. The loss comes after Real Madrid overtook Barcelona by defeating Real Sociedad earlier in the weekend. Hansi Flick’s team struggled to reclaim the lead in a fiercely contested derby match at Estadi Montilivi.
Barcelona initially took the lead thanks to a header from defender Pau Cubarsi in the 59th minute. However, Girona responded quickly, with Thomas Lemar equalizing shortly after. The comeback was completed by Fran Beltran, who scored the decisive goal just three minutes before the final whistle, propelling Girona to an impressive victory.
Flick expressed disappointment in his team’s performance, stating, “In the end, Girona deserved it; they had a lot of chances, and we defended very badly.” The coach acknowledged that the team is not currently in a good mindset, indicating the need for a reset. “There’s a long way to go; we’re now in second, and we have to fight for first place in the table,” he added.
This defeat follows a heavy 4-0 loss to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final, compounding Barcelona’s recent struggles. Cubarsi highlighted the need for improvement, noting, “We have to be self-critical. We didn’t play a great game, but now we have to rest and charge our batteries.”
The first half saw both teams create numerous opportunities, yet neither could find the net. Barcelona’s Raphinha narrowly missed with a shot, while Lamine Yamal hit the post after a penalty was awarded when Dani Olmo was fouled in the box. Girona’s Ukrainian striker Vladyslav Vanat also squandered several chances, leaving the score goalless at halftime.
After Cubarsi’s goal, Girona quickly leveled the match with Lemar’s strike. The momentum shifted in favor of the home side, who continued to press for more goals. Barcelona relied heavily on goalkeeper Joan Garcia, who made several crucial saves to keep the visitors in the match.
The decisive goal came in the 87th minute, when Beltran found the net from the edge of the area. Controversy arose as Barcelona players claimed a foul in the build-up, with Gerard Martin stating, “It seemed like a foul on Kounde to me, but we shouldn’t focus on decisions we can’t control.” Flick also suggested that a foul occurred, but he refrained from making it an excuse for the loss.
With Girona finishing the match with ten men after Joel Roca received a red card for a late challenge, the hosts celebrated a memorable victory with their supporters. Girona’s coach Michel Sanchez remarked, “Three points against Barcelona are more than three points; normally they beat almost all teams.”
This defeat places Barcelona in a precarious position as they look to recover and regain their form in the coming weeks. As the La Liga title race intensifies, both Barcelona and Real Madrid will continue to vie for supremacy in the Spanish league.
