George Russell Sets Pace in Chinese Grand Prix Practice Session

The opening practice session for the Chinese Grand Prix saw George Russell continue his strong start to the season by clocking the fastest time at the Shanghai International Circuit. Following his victory in Melbourne the previous week, Russell finished the session with a time 0.120 seconds ahead of his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, solidifying his early lead in the world championship standings.

In a display of dominance, Russell’s performance kept him firmly ahead of the competition, with Lando Norris from McLaren finishing third, 0.555 seconds behind. The session was not without its challenges for Lewis Hamilton, who experienced a spin at Turn 6 early on and concluded the hour 1.3 seconds off the pace. His efforts were hindered further by a less-than-ideal final lap, preventing him from setting a competitive time. Previously, Hamilton and Norris narrowly avoided contact at the last corner, a moment noted by the stewards but resulting in no further action.

Among the other notable performances, rookie Ollie Bearman impressed by securing seventh place in his Haas. Meanwhile, four-time world champion Max Verstappen struggled, finishing eighth and a staggering 1.8 seconds behind Russell, a result that reflects his ongoing frustration with the new regulations in Formula One.

This season, Mercedes appears to be in formidable form, and the results from this practice session suggest they may hold a significant advantage as the weekend progresses.
