Gavaskar Urges India to Utilize Bumrah Effectively in Semifinal
India’s legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has emphasized the importance of utilizing pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah effectively as the Indian team prepares for its T20 World Cup semifinal against England. Scheduled for Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, this match marks a repeat of the high-stakes encounters from the 2022 and 2024 editions.
Gavaskar, speaking to select media, highlighted that Bumrah should bowl at least two overs during the powerplay. He believes that securing early wickets, particularly those of key players like Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, and Harry Brook, could significantly weaken the English batting lineup. “If he can get those early wickets… he will have pretty much broken the back of the England batting,” Gavaskar stated.
Historically, Bumrah has primarily bowled only one over in the powerplay, conserving his overs for the death overs. However, during the Super Eight match against South Africa, he bowled two overs upfront. Gavaskar pointed out that allowing the opposition batters to settle in before facing Bumrah could be detrimental. “Him coming in to bowl the fifth over… means that both batters have about 8-10 deliveries to settle in. Wouldn’t it be better for Bumrah and for India if he were to bowl to them first?” he pondered.
As anticipation builds for the semifinal, Gavaskar expects the clash to be a thrilling encounter, describing it as a “humdinger.” He noted that India’s versatile batting unit gives them a slight edge. In past encounters, the teams have exchanged victories, with England defeating India by 10 wickets in 2022, while India claimed victory in 2024.
Both teams are evenly matched, possessing strong batting and bowling line-ups. Gavaskar acknowledged that England features players familiar with Indian conditions due to their experience in the Indian Premier League (IPL). “They have got a few players who have played in the IPL, who are familiar with Indian conditions, familiar with the pressure of playing a knockout,” he noted.
Gavaskar also praised Bumrah’s unique bowling style, which makes him difficult to read. He drew a comparison to tennis player Andre Agassi, highlighting how Agassi learned to anticipate serves based on subtle cues. “Bumrah doesn’t give you anything away. Therefore, it’s very, very difficult to read him,” he explained. This unpredictability, combined with his ability to move the ball in various directions, has made Bumrah a formidable bowler across all formats.
India’s flexibility in batting order has also been a crucial asset. Gavaskar pointed to Tilak Varma, who has successfully batted in multiple positions throughout the tournament. Initially batting at No. 3, Varma adjusted to the team’s needs by moving down to No. 5 or 6 after Sanju Samson was included in the lineup. His contributions in crucial matches against Zimbabwe and the West Indies have been instrumental in guiding India to the semifinals.
Despite his recent struggles, Gavaskar warned against underestimating Jos Buttler. “He can be the kind of dangerous player that Abhishek Sharma is. Getting Buttler’s wicket early is going to be ideal,” he cautioned. Buttler’s potential for explosive innings in crucial matches makes him a player to watch.
As the T20 World Cup semifinal approaches, the focus will remain on strategic decisions regarding player utilization and matchups, particularly the pivotal role of Bumrah. With both teams preparing to showcase their skills, fans eagerly await what promises to be an exhilarating contest.
