Aryna Sabalenka’s Unusual Start at 2026 Australian Open
Aryna Sabalenka experienced an unexpected moment prior to her first-round match at the 2026 Australian Open, as the chair umpire instructed her to remove a wearable fitness device known as a ‘Whoop.’ The World No. 1 appeared visibly displeased by the decision but quickly shifted her focus to her match against 20-year-old Tiantsoa Sarah Rakotomanga Rajaonah from France. Despite the unusual interruption, Sabalenka demonstrated her prowess on the court, winning decisively with a score of 6-4, 6-1.
The incident occurred just before Sabalenka was set to face her opponent, leading to a brief but tense moment as the umpire enforced the rules regarding wearable technology. The device, which tracks health and fitness metrics without a screen, was deemed inappropriate for use during competition. After complying with the umpire’s request, Sabalenka cast a cold glare at her team, reflecting her frustration.
In the early stages of the match, Sabalenka did not have the ideal start, getting broken in the first game. However, the 22-time career singles titleholder quickly regained her form. She showcased her skill and resilience, ultimately securing a comfortable victory against the 118th-ranked player.
Following her win, Sabalenka participated in an on-court interview where she candidly expressed her nerves about playing in front of tennis legends Rod Laver and Roger Federer. She admitted to deliberately avoiding eye contact with them during the match, emphasizing the pressure of competing under such scrutiny.
Next Challenge for Sabalenka
Looking ahead, Sabalenka will face 23-year-old Chinese qualifier Zhuoxuan Bai, who caused an upset by defeating former World No. 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round. If Sabalenka progresses past Bai, she may encounter Emma Raducanu in the third round. Raducanu, who recently triumphed over Anastasia Potapova with a convincing score of 6-4, 6-1, is considered a formidable opponent.
As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on Sabalenka as she seeks to build on her impressive start and navigate through the competitive landscape of the 2026 Australian Open. The combination of unique challenges and high-profile matches promises an exciting atmosphere in Melbourne.
