Uttar Pradesh Signs MoU with Japan to Boost Green Hydrogen Sector
Uttar Pradesh is taking significant strides toward becoming a global leader in green energy, following a recent visit by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to Japan. During this trip, the state government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Yamanashi Prefecture, focusing on green hydrogen as a core area of collaboration. This agreement includes various aspects such as production, technological partnership, research, skill training, and extensive industrial applications.
The MoU marks a pivotal moment for Uttar Pradesh, as it aims to enhance energy self-reliance and industrial competitiveness while working towards achieving net-zero targets. In the upcoming budget for the financial year 2026-27, the Uttar Pradesh government has proposed an allocation of ₹2,104 crore for energy development initiatives, indicating a strong commitment to this sector.
Green Hydrogen Initiatives and Infrastructure Development
Yamanashi Prefecture is recognized for its advancements in green hydrogen technology. During his visit, Chief Minister Adityanath toured the Advanced Hydrogen Energy Facility Center, where he reviewed the innovative Power-to-Gas system. This system converts electricity generated from renewable sources, like solar and wind, into hydrogen through electrolysis, facilitating energy storage, fuel generation, and clean transportation. Adityanath highlighted the potential for adopting this model in Uttar Pradesh, which could significantly reduce carbon emissions.
A crucial element of this green hydrogen partnership is the focus on academic and technical training. Under the MoU, students from higher technical institutions in Uttar Pradesh will receive training at educational institutions in Yamanashi. This initiative will equip students with knowledge of advanced techniques related to hydrogen production and safety standards. The training will encompass both practical and theoretical components, enabling participants to implement these technologies in various sectors upon their return to Uttar Pradesh.
To further bolster these efforts, a Center of Excellence for green hydrogen is being established at IIT Kanpur. This center aims to foster research, innovation, and industry partnerships, focusing on reducing production costs and developing safe storage systems. The initiative seeks to directly connect academic research with real-world industrial applications.
Harnessing Natural Resources for Green Hydrogen Production
Uttar Pradesh’s abundant natural resources are conducive to green hydrogen production, which requires clean water and renewable energy. The state is strategically planning to integrate its renewable energy projects with hydrogen production capabilities. Chief Minister Adityanath emphasized that green hydrogen will form the foundation of future energy strategies, showcasing a proactive policy approach to meet future energy demands.
The collaboration with Japan is expected to provide Uttar Pradesh with globally recognized technology and expertise. Experts believe that the tripartite strategy encompassing training, research, and industrial application will position the state as a leader in India’s green hydrogen sector. This partnership is not merely an agreement but a foundational step towards a sustainable, energy-efficient industrial future.
Concrete actions have already begun, with the inauguration of Uttar Pradesh’s first green hydrogen plant in Khanipur village, located in Gorakhpur district. This facility is the largest initiative in India’s city gas distribution sector aimed at blending green hydrogen with natural gas. Through this plant, green hydrogen is being blended with compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG) for supply to domestic consumers, industries, and the transportation sector. It is estimated that this initiative will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 500 tons annually.
The establishment of this plant demonstrates that Uttar Pradesh is not only planning for a sustainable future but is also delivering tangible results in the present. As the state continues its journey towards becoming a green energy hub, the collaborative efforts with Yamanashi Prefecture could serve as a model for other regions looking to adopt similar initiatives in the growing green hydrogen landscape.
