Prime Minister Modi Launches CSIR-NIIST Innovation Hub in Kerala

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship Hub at the CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) in Thonnackal, Kerala, on January 23, 2026. The hub is designed to stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship, with a vision to create numerous success stories in the coming years, according to N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

During a press briefing, Dr. Kalaiselvi, who also serves as Secretary for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, highlighted the significance of the ten-acre facility located within the Bio-360 Life Sciences Park. She noted that the Kerala government has facilitated the project by transferring land on a 90-year lease, illustrating its commitment to fostering innovation in the region.

Focus Areas of the Hub

The hub will concentrate on several critical areas, including centres of excellence dedicated to Ayurveda research and sustainable packaging. Additional initiatives include establishing a Regional Resource Development Centre for coir, rubber, and spices, as well as a pilot plant aimed at producing solar hydrogen from wastewater. Furthermore, a production line for biopolymers and bio-based products will support the hub’s goals.

According to statements from NIIST, the hub aims to act as a catalyst for deep-tech innovation, bridging the gap between research and commercialisation in the life sciences sector. The initiative seeks to create an ecosystem conducive to startups and medium, small, and micro enterprises (MSMEs), while also promoting skill development and employment opportunities.

Collaboration and Future Goals

Collaboration with organisations such as the Spices Board, Coir Board, and Rubber Board will be essential for driving innovation at the hub. C. Anandharamakrishnan, director of CSIR-NIIST, stated that the hub’s strategic focus aligns with national efforts to strengthen the life science industries and develop a skilled talent pool. He emphasized the importance of establishing a life science cluster in Thiruvananthapuram that supports focused growth.

This initiative coincides with broader efforts in Kerala, particularly the Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster project spearheaded by the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (Anert). The CSIR-NIIST hub is envisioned as a national platform that will enhance deep-tech innovation and entrepreneurship, contributing to the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

As the hub begins its journey, expectations are high for its potential to transform the landscape of innovation and entrepreneurship in Kerala and beyond.
