Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSK HPKV) in Palampur has achieved a significant milestone with the certification of its innovative diagnostic device, the Bovine Endometrium Cytotaping Catheter, by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This marks the university’s first certification from the BIS, highlighting its dedication to research and innovation in veterinary science.

The device was developed under the guidance of Dr Pankaj Sood and his research team, which includes Dr Ankit Ahuja, Dr Rohit Mankotia, and Dr Vijender Negi. Validation efforts for the device involved collaboration with scientists from Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, including Dr AK Pandey and Dr Sandeep Kumar.

Significance of the Certification

During a recent statement, Vice-Chancellor Dr AK Panda expressed pride in the team’s achievement, describing the BIS certification as a testament to the university’s commitment to scientific excellence. He noted that this recognition not only enhances the credibility of the technology on a national level but also paves the way for its broader adoption among livestock farmers. Dr Panda emphasized that this innovation is expected to significantly improve cattle health and productivity.

The Bovine Endometrium Cytotaping Catheter is specifically designed to detect subclinical uterine infections in cows, a common reproductive disorder that often goes unnoticed and can negatively impact fertility and conception rates. According to the research team, this indigenously developed device presents several advantages over imported options, including enhanced reliability, reusability, and cost-effectiveness, making it especially suitable for field-level veterinary use.

Impact on Livestock Health and Farmer Benefits

This advancement in veterinary diagnostics is anticipated to strengthen reproductive health management within the dairy cattle sector. It is expected to contribute to sustainable growth in the livestock industry, ultimately benefiting farmers and bolstering the rural economy.

The standard for the device was submitted to BIS in February 2022 and underwent comprehensive evaluation by experts before receiving approval. The research team’s dedication to creating innovative solutions demonstrates a significant step forward in addressing reproductive health issues in livestock, with the potential to enhance the livelihoods of those reliant on dairy farming.

In conclusion, CSK HPKV’s achievement not only showcases the university’s research capabilities but also serves as a vital resource for veterinary professionals working to improve the health and productivity of cattle across the region. The certification of the Bovine Endometrium Cytotaping Catheter stands as a promising development for the future of veterinary care in India.
