GOPHA Launches Forum to Enhance Optometry’s Role in Public Health

The Global Optometry Public Health Alliance (GOPHA) officially launched a public health forum on January 19, 2026, in collaboration with the India Vision Institute (IVI). This significant event aimed to unite key stakeholders in optometry and public health to improve access to essential eye care services for underserved communities globally.

This forum aligns with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) SPECS 2030 framework, which emphasizes the importance of integrating optometry into public health systems. The discussions primarily focused on enhancing prevention strategies, facilitating early detection, ensuring timely referrals, and fostering stronger connections with primary healthcare services.

Strengthening Eye Care Access

Titled “Synergizing Global Efforts: The Vital Role of Optometry in Achieving WHO SPECS 2030 Targets,” the forum highlighted an emerging consensus on the need for eye health to be an integral part of broader health systems. More than 900 delegates from 69 countries came together to share insights and strategies to embed eye care within public health initiatives.

Kovin Naidoo, interim president of GOPHA, opened the forum by underscoring the potential of the optometry profession to significantly contribute to global eye health goals. His remarks set the tone for a day filled with impactful discussions and collaborative efforts.

The forum featured prominent addresses from international leaders in the field. Cindy Tromans, president of the World Council of Optometry, and Stuart Keel, a technical officer for Blindness Prevention under the WHO SPECS 2030 initiative, both reinforced the critical need for a unified approach to eye health. Their insights emphasized that achieving these health targets requires a concerted effort from all sectors.
