Eye Screenings Evolve: Detecting Diabetes and Heart Disease
Recent advancements in ophthalmology now enable eye screenings to detect early signs of serious health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. This significant development was highlighted during the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India (IIRSI) conference held on March 25, 2025. Experts in the field emphasized the evolving role of eye health, linking it to broader systemic health issues and addressing concerns over increased screen exposure and air pollution.
Dr. Mahipal Singh Sachdev, chairman of the scientific committee at IIRSI, stated that the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into eye care is transforming early detection methods. “Today, screening of the eyes can help detect diabetes. With the help of AI, a simple retinal photograph can predict the chances of diabetic retinopathy and even provide insights into a person’s cardiovascular health,” he explained.
The ability to assess retinal blood vessels non-invasively allows for the detection of “early signs of prediabetes, leukemia, and certain cancer-related changes,” according to Dr. Sachdev. This shift in focus illustrates how ophthalmology is rapidly advancing beyond traditional cataract and cosmetic procedures.
Innovative Technologies and Access to Care
Dr. Ritika Sachdev from the Centre for Sight highlighted the importance of improved access to imaging technology, particularly in rural areas where ophthalmology care is scarce. “The imaging technology today is excellent and can be taken to smaller and rural areas of the country, which has a dearth of ophthalmology care,” she noted. The need for accessible diabetes diagnosis is particularly urgent, as India is identified as the “diabetes capital of the world.”
Dr. Shishir Agrawal, an ophthalmologist based in Delhi, acknowledged the significant advancements in the field. “Decades ago, cataract surgery used to be the bread and butter for ophthalmologists. But with advances in lenses and surgical technologies, ophthalmology has reached an entirely new level,” he remarked.
Despite these advancements, the speakers at the conference raised concerns about the implications of rising screen exposure across all age groups. Proactive measures for eye protection have become essential, especially as air pollution contributes to an increase in eye-related health issues. Dr. Sachdev cautioned, “People assume that air pollution only affects the lungs, but it directly impacts the eyes as well,” advocating for the use of protective eyewear and lubricating drops in poor air quality.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Ophthalmology
The 2025 IIRSI conference, themed “Hindsight. Insight. Foresight,” served as a scientific platform rooted in past learnings, clinical excellence, and future innovations. The event brought together over 700 experts from India and abroad, representing various specialties, including cataract, refractive, cornea, and anterior segment surgeries.
The discussions highlighted not only the advancements in technology and accessibility but also the pressing need for public awareness regarding eye health in the context of systemic diseases. As the field continues to evolve, the integration of innovative technologies in eye screenings may play a crucial role in early detection and prevention strategies, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
