Breakthrough AI Stethoscope Detects Heart Issues in 15 Seconds

A new artificial intelligence-powered stethoscope has been developed by researchers at Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, enabling the rapid detection of major heart conditions within just 15 seconds. This innovative device represents a significant advancement in medical technology, enhancing the traditional stethoscope used since 1816.

The AI stethoscope, manufactured by Eko Health, is compact, roughly the size of a playing card. It is designed to be placed on a patient’s chest to record an electrocardiogram (ECG) and capture the sounds of blood flow through the heart. The collected data is then transmitted to a cloud-based system where AI algorithms analyze it for indicators of heart conditions. The results are promptly sent back to a smartphone, allowing for swift diagnosis of heart failure, heart valve disease, and abnormal heart rhythms.

This technology is particularly impactful for early diagnosis. The AI stethoscope can detect subtle variations in heartbeat and blood flow that may be imperceptible to the human ear. By identifying these conditions early, the device can facilitate timely treatment, potentially saving lives.

A comprehensive study involving approximately 12,000 patients across 200 GP surgeries in the UK assessed individuals presenting symptoms such as breathlessness and fatigue. The findings revealed that patients assessed with the AI stethoscope were twice as likely to be diagnosed with heart failure compared to those who received standard examinations. The likelihood of diagnosing atrial fibrillation—an abnormal heart rhythm that significantly increases stroke risk—was three times higher in those examined with the new technology. Additionally, patients were twice as likely to be diagnosed with heart valve disease, a condition where one or more heart valves do not function properly.

Healthcare professionals are optimistic about the implications of this technology. Dr. Patrik Bächtiger from Imperial College London’s National Heart and Lung Institute remarked, “It is incredible that a smart stethoscope can be used for a 15-second examination, and then AI can quickly deliver a test result indicating whether someone has heart failure, atrial fibrillation, or heart valve disease.”

Dr. Mihir Kelshiker, also affiliated with Imperial College, highlighted the potential for the AI stethoscope to change the landscape of heart disease diagnosis. He noted that “most people with heart failure are only diagnosed when they arrive in A&E seriously ill. This trial shows that AI-enabled stethoscopes could change that – giving GPs a quick, simple tool to spot problems earlier, so patients can get the right treatment sooner.”

The groundbreaking research and development of the AI stethoscope were recently presented at the European Society of Cardiology annual congress in Madrid, which is recognized as the world’s largest heart conference.
