Australian Start-Up Develops Data Centers Fueled by Brain Cells

Australia-based biotech start-up Cortical Labs has introduced a groundbreaking approach to data centers, utilizing human brain cells instead of traditional silicon chips. The company unveiled its first biological data center in Melbourne and is collaborating with DayOne Data Centers Ltd. to establish a second facility in Singapore. This innovative technology aims to address some of the pressing concerns related to energy consumption and resource shortages prevalent in conventional computing.

At the heart of these facilities are biological computers known as CL1 units, which are powered by lab-grown neurons. This shift away from conventional servers is significant, as the development of artificial intelligence has raised alarms regarding the environmental impact of data centers, particularly their energy and water usage. Cortical Labs’ technology proposes a potential solution, offering a more sustainable alternative.

While the current computing power of the CL1 units remains limited, Cortical Labs has successfully demonstrated the capabilities of its brain cells through interactive gaming. The neurons can now play basic games like Pong and more complex ones such as Doom. These neurons, cultivated from stem cells, are situated on a chip that facilitates the transmission of electrical signals, allowing the software to engage with the neurons and interpret their responses as computing output.

Energy Efficiency and Future Expansion

One of the most compelling aspects of this new technology is its energy efficiency. According to Hon Weng Chong, founder and CEO of Cortical Labs, each CL1 unit consumes significantly less power than a handheld calculator. This remarkable efficiency positions the biological computers as a viable alternative to conventional AI processors, which typically require substantial energy resources.

The Melbourne facility is designed to accommodate 120 CL1 units, while the Singapore center is set to deploy up to 1,000 units in phases. This expansion reflects Cortical Labs’ commitment to advancing its technology and exploring the full potential of biological computing.
