ASR District Introduces Gabion Structures to Combat Landslides

The ASR district administration in Visakhapatnam has announced the reopening of all ghat roads previously damaged by rockslides and mudslides. This restoration follows heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Montha. The district’s collector, A.S. Dinesh Kumar, confirmed the news on Friday, highlighting plans to construct gabion structures at key locations to mitigate future landslide risks.

Gabion structures consist of galvanized steel wire mesh cages filled with solid materials such as rocks or concrete. They are commonly used in civil engineering for retaining walls and slope stabilization. The collector emphasized that these structures provide a cost-effective and flexible alternative to traditional concrete or brick solutions.

Strategic Locations Identified for Construction

According to Dinesh Kumar, nine locations in the ASR district—specifically Anantagiri, Araku Valley, Hukumpeta, G. Madugula, and G.K. Veedhi—have been identified as vulnerable to rockfalls and mudslides. Teams from the Roads and Buildings department will conduct a survey to determine the best sites for the new gabion structures.

While Dinesh Kumar acknowledged that gabions may not fully protect against large boulders, he asserted they are effective in preventing smaller stones and mudslides from impacting the roads. He stated, “Gabion structures may not protect the roads from huge boulders. But they can prevent smaller stones and mudslides.”

Increased Traffic and Future Plans

The collector indicated that ongoing road repairs and the installation of gabion structures will become routine, particularly as traffic has surged on the ghat roads. This increase in vehicle flow is attributed to the growing popularity of tourist spots in the ASR district, which have drawn attention on a national scale.

In a related update, A.S. Dinesh Kumar confirmed that all relief camps established for those affected by the recent weather events have been closed, as residents have safely returned to their homes. The proactive measures being taken in the district reflect a commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing safety for both residents and visitors.
