Telangana BJP Leader N. Ramchander Rao Arrested Before Visit
Police in Hyderabad arrested N. Ramchander Rao, the president of the Telangana BJP, on March 15, 2024, at his residence in Tarnaka. The arrest occurred as he attempted to travel to Banswada in Kamareddy district to meet with local MLA K. Venkata Ramana Reddy and the families of individuals injured during recent clashes in the area. Authorities had previously placed Rao under house arrest to prevent his departure, but when he attempted to leave, police took him into custody.
Tensions escalated outside Rao’s home as BJP supporters gathered in protest. Reports indicate that a scuffle broke out between party members and police personnel, resulting in the detention of several BJP activists. The atmosphere was charged, reflecting the heightened emotions surrounding the incident.
Bandi Sanjay Kumar, a senior BJP leader, criticized the arrest, labeling it an “illegal” action against the state party chief. In a statement, Kumar alleged that the Congress government was avoiding accountability by confining opposition leaders instead of addressing the violence in Banswada. He further accused both the Congress party and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen of undermining the law and called into question whether the state was experiencing “Praja Palana or police raj.” Kumar likened the situation to “Emergency-like days,” asserting that such threats and arrests would not deter the BJP from supporting victims and exposing what he views as government bias.
Local police officials defended their actions, stating that the measures were necessary to maintain law and order in a sensitive area following the unrest. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further developments as tensions continue to simmer in the region.
As the political landscape in Telangana evolves, the BJP’s response to this incident may play a significant role in the party’s strategies moving forward, particularly in light of upcoming electoral challenges.
