Rajnath Singh Criticizes Congress for Marginalizing Vande Mataram
During a recent debate in the Lok Sabha commemorating the 150th anniversary of the national song, Vande Mataram, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh criticized the Congress party for its historical neglect of the anthem. He asserted that while Jana Gana Mana has been embraced as a core symbol of national identity, Vande Mataram has faced political alteration and marginalization since 1937.
Singh characterized this neglect as part of the Congress party’s “politics of appeasement,” which he argued has had long-lasting repercussions on India’s communal harmony and contributed to the country’s partition. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging both songs as integral to India’s cultural fabric, stating that they represent “the two eyes of Mother India.”
In his remarks, Singh called for a restoration of Vande Mataram’s dignity, asserting that it is crucial for future generations to appreciate their country’s history. He expressed concern over narratives that seek to create a divide between India’s national anthem and its national song, urging that both should be honored equally as symbols of national pride.
Singh’s comments come at a time when discussions around national identity and cultural heritage are increasingly pertinent in Indian society. By advocating for Vande Mataram’s recognition, he aims to foster a sense of unity and reverence for India’s diverse heritage.
The debate highlighted the ongoing tensions in Indian politics regarding historical narratives and the role of national symbols in contemporary society. As Singh pushes for the restoration of Vande Mataram, the conversation about India’s collective memory and identity continues to evolve, bringing to the forefront the importance of inclusivity and respect for all components of the nation’s legacy.
