Pakistan Conducts Airstrikes, Claims 70 Militants Killed Near Border
Pakistan’s military has reported the killing of at least 70 militants in a series of airstrikes targeting militant hideouts along the border with Afghanistan. These operations were conducted in response to recent attacks within Pakistan, underscoring ongoing tensions in the region. However, the Afghan defense ministry has rejected these claims, alleging that the strikes resulted in civilian casualties instead.
In a statement, Talal Chaudhry, Pakistan’s deputy interior minister, confirmed the reported death toll but did not present immediate evidence to support the military’s assertions. The Afghan defense ministry indicated that various civilian areas in Nangarhar and Paktika provinces were affected, including a religious madrassa and multiple residential homes. Pakistani media outlets reported that the airstrikes targeted districts such as Khogyani, Ghani Khil, and Behsud in Nangarhar, along with the Barmal district in Paktika early on Sunday morning.
Afghan Response and Regional Tensions
The Afghan defense ministry condemned the airstrikes, characterizing them as a violation of Afghanistan’s airspace and sovereignty. In response to the operations, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari defended the strikes as an exercise of Pakistan’s right to defend itself against cross-border terrorism.
The issue of cross-border militant activity has become increasingly contentious, particularly as violence has surged in Pakistan in recent years, largely attributed to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and banned Baloch separatist groups. The TTP, which has established links with Afghanistan’s Taliban, is accused by Islamabad of operating from Afghan territory, a claim consistently denied by both the group and the Afghan government.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar emphasized that the military’s actions were based on intelligence and were aimed at specific targets associated with the TTP and its affiliates. He reiterated that while Pakistan seeks to maintain peace and stability in the region, the safety and security of Pakistani citizens remain a paramount concern.
International Reactions
India has also weighed in on the situation, condemning the airstrikes as an attempt by Pakistan to externalize its internal challenges. Foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed support for Afghanistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting the complex and often fraught relationships in South Asia.
As the security situation continues to evolve, the ramifications of these military actions may have significant implications for both Pakistan and Afghanistan, particularly in the context of ongoing militant violence and regional stability.
