Malankara Orthodox Church Praises PM Modi’s Call for Unity
The head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Catholicos Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews III, expressed approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s recent stance advocating for the unity of the Malankara Church. His comments came during the memorial feast of Vattasseril Thirumeni, held at the Old Seminary in Kottayam on March 16, 2024. This endorsement gains importance following Modi’s meeting with Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II, the leader of the Jacobite Syrian Church, which has been involved in a long-standing dispute with the Malankara Orthodox Church.
During the event, Mathews highlighted that the Supreme Court of India had upheld the principle of church unity in its verdicts from 1958, 1995, and 2017. He reiterated that the Malankara Church has consistently advocated for a united front since the time of Vattasseril Thirumeni. The Catholicos remarked, “The vision of unity is essential for our faith and community.”
The Malankara Orthodox Church has faced internal challenges, primarily stemming from differences with the Jacobite faction over administrative and spiritual leadership. The support from the Prime Minister is seen as a significant endorsement for the Malankara Orthodox Church’s position during a pivotal time in its history.
Mathews emphasized the need for the church to move forward as a cohesive entity, stating, “Our strength lies in our unity. The call for an undivided church aligns with our mission to serve the community and uphold our traditions.” His remarks reflect a broader desire within the church community to resolve longstanding disputes and focus on collective growth.
The significance of Modi’s support cannot be understated, especially given the political sensitivities surrounding religious organizations in India. His acknowledgment of the Malankara Church’s position may pave the way for more constructive dialogue between the two factions.
As the Malankara Orthodox Church continues to navigate its internal dynamics, the backing from national leadership signifies hope for reconciliation and unity. The church’s commitment to its founding principles remains steadfast as it seeks to foster a more inclusive environment for all its members.
