Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar Dies in Plane Crash, State Mourns
The tragic death of Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has sent shockwaves across the state, following a plane crash near Baramati on January 28, 2026. Pawar was on board a Learjet 45 that crash-landed shortly after taking off from Mumbai, resulting in the loss of five lives, including his personal security officer and two crew members.
As news of the incident spread, large crowds of supporters and political leaders gathered in Pune to pay their respects. The city prepared for Pawar’s funeral, scheduled for the following day. Mourners, including party workers and citizens, lined the roads leading to the Vidya Pratishthan, where tributes were paid in the form of floral arrangements and heartfelt prayers. Many attendees expressed their sorrow openly, highlighting Pawar’s significant impact on the community.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered Pawar as a leader deeply connected to the grassroots, reflecting his long-standing commitment to public service. The state government declared three days of mourning, with flags flying at half-mast across Maharashtra. A public holiday was also announced to allow citizens to join in the mourning.
Funeral Arrangements and Political Response
The funeral will take place at the Vidya Pratishthan ground at 11 a.m. on January 29. Leaders from various political parties, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, are expected to attend, underscoring the widespread respect for Pawar. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), to which Pawar belonged, confirmed that dignitaries from across the political spectrum would gather to honor his memory.
Leaders have been visiting Pawar’s family to extend their sympathies. Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Fadnavis met with Pawar’s wife, Sunetra Pawar, to offer their condolences. In a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), they expressed their heartfelt sympathy following the tragic loss.
Investigation into the Crash
The crash of the Learjet 45, operated by VSR Ventures, is under investigation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). These teams are committed to uncovering the details surrounding the accident, with assurances that the investigation will proceed transparently.
Ajit Pawar is survived by his wife and two sons, Parth and Jay. His legacy in Maharashtra politics will be remembered as one marked by substantial contributions to local governance and development initiatives. As the state mourns, tributes continue to pour in, highlighting the profound loss felt by both his family and constituents.
