India and China Strengthen Ties Amid BRICS Preparations
India and China convened on February 6, 2024, to assess their bilateral relationship and explore avenues for strengthening ties through increased people-to-people exchanges. The discussions emphasized the need to address “sensitive issues,” with both nations recognizing the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along their shared border.
The meeting, part of the India–China Strategic Dialogue, was led by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Ma Zhaoxu, China’s Executive Vice-Foreign Minister. Ma is in New Delhi to attend the BRICS Sherpa Meeting from February 8 to 10, which is crucial in laying the groundwork for the upcoming BRICS Summit in 2026.
During the dialogue, both sides reviewed the “positive momentum” in their relationship and engaged in comprehensive discussions regarding various bilateral, regional, and international matters. The talks primarily focused on recent efforts to stabilize and rejuvenate their ties while identifying effective strategies for future engagement.
One of the key points of the dialogue was the mutual commitment to maintaining peace in border areas, which both parties underscored as essential for overall bilateral relations. They reiterated the necessity of addressing issues, including those related to bilateral trade, from a broader political and strategic perspective, aligning with guidance provided by their respective leaders.
Vikram Misri highlighted the successful resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, expressing optimism for the program’s expansion. The dialogue also included discussions on finalizing an updated Air Services Agreement and facilitating visa processes to promote greater interaction between citizens of both countries.
As the BRICS Sherpa Meeting proceeds, the focus on multilateral cooperation has intensified. The Chinese delegation expressed its support for a successful BRICS Summit in India, reinforcing the collaboration between the two nations within this international framework. Notably, Ma communicated that China acknowledges and respects India’s aspirations for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
In a related context, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed satisfaction with the interactions among BRICS-2026 Sherpas and country representatives. He emphasized the significance of BRICS as a platform for international cooperation, especially as the group marks its 20th anniversary. Jaishankar welcomed the insights shared by various delegations to advance India’s BRICS 2026 priorities, which focus on resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability, particularly with a people-centric approach.
The ongoing discussions and initiatives reflect a concerted effort by both nations to navigate their complex relationship while enhancing cooperation within the broader framework of international diplomacy.
