Haryana Celebrates Pandit Jasraj’s Legacy with Cultural Honor
The birth anniversary of renowned classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj was commemorated on March 25, 2024, in his hometown of Pili Mandori, located in the Fatehabad district of Haryana. The event, attended by Haryana’s Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, celebrated the artist’s enduring influence on Indian classical music. Despite arriving approximately 90 minutes late due to adverse weather conditions, Saini took part in the festivities alongside other notable figures, including Cabinet Minister Ranbir Gangwa, Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Barala, and noted singer Anup Jalota.
The highlight of the occasion was the unveiling of a statue of Pandit Jasraj at the local library. During his address, Chief Minister Saini remarked that Pandit Jasraj “was an institution, not just an artiste,” emphasizing his profound impact on the music world. The anniversary also marked the fourth year of the Pandit Jasraj Cultural Foundation, which aims to promote and preserve Jasraj’s musical legacy, a foundation inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022.
Born in 1930 into a distinguished musical family, Pandit Jasraj lost his father at a young age but rose to become a global ambassador for Indian classical music. Saini acknowledged the rich musical heritage of Haryana, attributing its depth to the contributions of maestros like Jasraj.
Calls for Cultural Development
Durga Jasraj, the artist’s daughter, reflected on the significance of her father’s roots in Pili Mandori. She urged the Chief Minister to consider establishing a grand cultural centre and hosting a major music festival in Panchkula, expressing hope that these initiatives would keep her father’s legacy alive. Saini responded positively, assuring her that her requests would be addressed.
Anup Jalota also paid tribute during the event, highlighting Jasraj’s significant contributions to classical music and performing a devotional song in his honor. The village sarpanch, Dharamveer, noted that this was the first visit by a sitting Chief Minister in nearly 22 years, with the last visit occurring in 2004 by then Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala.
In addition to the cultural celebrations, Saini announced several developmental projects for the village. These included the establishment of a 33 kV power substation, funding for community buildings, renovation of the library, and a commitment to upgrade the Bhattu sub-tehsil to a full tehsil. He also promised the establishment of an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Bhattu Mandi, further enhancing local infrastructure and educational opportunities.
The event not only paid homage to a legendary artist but also highlighted ongoing efforts to bolster cultural and developmental initiatives in Haryana. Pandit Jasraj’s influence continues to resonate through both his music and the community that nurtures his legacy.
