Congress Mobilizes Independents Ahead of Crucial Civic Elections
In a high-stakes political maneuvering, the Congress party has successfully garnered support from independents and councillors from the All India Forward Bloc across several municipalities in Telangana. This strategic alliance comes just ahead of the elections scheduled for March 15, 2024, to select mayors and deputy mayors in seven municipal corporations, as well as chairpersons and their deputies for 116 municipalities.
The negotiations have been intense, with Congress leaders engaging in discussions for hours in various urban local bodies. As the deadline approaches, no party appears to have a decisive advantage. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy held a Zoom conference with Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and other ministers, emphasizing the need to ensure that the party’s commitment to social justice is reflected in candidate selections for key positions.
Amidst the ongoing political drama, all three major parties—Congress, BJP, and BRS—are actively working to consolidate their support bases and attract independents. Notably, the situation is particularly intriguing in Jangaon, where both the Congress-CPM alliance and the BRS have secured 13 seats each. The outcome could hinge on the support of two corporators from each camp, as both factions have an ex-officio member in MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy (Congress) and MLA Palla Rajeshwar Reddy (BRS).
In Karimnagar, tensions have escalated as Congress aims to challenge the BJP, which currently holds a majority with 30 corporators in a 66-division corporation. Key leaders, including ministers D. Sridhar Babu, Tummala Nageswara Rao, and Ponnam Prabhakar, have mobilized Congress corporators to a resort on the outskirts of Hyderabad, where they are strategizing. Three independents and two Forward Bloc members have joined their ranks, boosting Congress’s strength to 19. Additionally, the MIM (Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen) has pledged support from its three corporators.
Meanwhile, in Kothagudem, revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy successfully persuaded five independents to join Congress. With 22 seats, Congress is exploring a potential power-sharing agreement with its ally, CPI, which also secured 22 seats. The CPM has extended its support to Congress, while the BRS has indicated backing for CPI, setting the stage for potential cooperation.
The political landscape in Nizamabad reflects similar dynamics, with Congress focusing on attracting independents while engaging in talks with MIM. Reports suggest that Congress and MIM may be negotiating a deal to share the mayoral position for alternating terms.
As the election day approaches, the internal conflicts within the Congress party have raised concerns among state leaders. In Jagtial, for instance, 22 Congress candidates and 18 independents, who are former rebels, have won seats. However, infighting between Congress leader T. Jeevan Reddy and defected BRS MLA Dr. Sanjay continues to create unrest.
On March 15, newly elected candidates will take their oaths at 11:00 AM, followed by the commencement of indirect elections at 12:30 PM. The entire election process will be video-recorded, ensuring transparency and accountability during this crucial civic election cycle.
