Clashes Erupt Between BJP and Congress Workers Across Madhya Pradesh
Tensions escalated in Madhya Pradesh on February 21, 2024, as violent clashes erupted between workers of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Indian National Congress. The confrontations left several individuals injured, including police personnel and members of the media. This unrest occurred during a state-wide protest organized by the BJP Yuva Morcha, which aimed to express indignation over a controversial protest by Congress activists at the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
The most intense violence was reported in Indore, where BJP demonstrators gathered near the Congress office at Gandhi Bhavan. What began as a demonstration quickly spiraled into chaos. Protests also erupted in Bhopal, Gwalior, and Rewa, with reports indicating that BJP workers burned effigies of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
According to officials, the situation escalated into stone-pelting between the two factions. In the disorder, protestors hurled not only stones but also water bottles, oil bags, oranges, and tomatoes. Footage circulating on social media captured police efforts to regain control as the violence unfolded. In response, additional law enforcement and water cannons were deployed to disperse the crowds.
Among those injured were a Sub-Inspector and a cameraman, both of whom required hospitalization. The aftermath of the clashes saw both parties exchanging accusations regarding the instigation of violence. BJP media in-charge Ashish Agarwal claimed that Congress workers initiated the stone-throwing during what he described as a peaceful demonstration. He asserted, “The scattered stones and bricks indicate that Congress came prepared to incite violence.”
Conversely, Jitu Patwari, the state Congress president, accused BJP workers of launching an attack on Congress members outside their office, resulting in serious injuries to Indore District President Vipin Wankhede and several colleagues. He stated that numerous journalists and civilians were also caught up in the clashes.
Indore police confirmed that order has been restored and an investigation is currently underway. In light of the violence, security measures around Congress offices in both Bhopal and Indore have been significantly heightened. The events reflect a growing political tension in the region as both parties prepare for upcoming electoral challenges.
