Trans Rights Group Launches Campaign to Promote Acceptance in Bengaluru
In Bengaluru, the human rights organization Ondede is set to launch its “Bhaya Bidi-Preethi Maadi” (Shed Fear, Spread Love) campaign on March 15, 2024, aimed at fostering social acceptance for transgender communities. The initiative, led by prominent transgender activist Akkai Padmashali, seeks to address the disparity between legal recognition and societal acceptance, despite recent judicial victories.
Padmashali emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by the transgender community during a press conference. She highlighted that, while the 2014 NALSA judgment and the 2023 marriage equality verdict marked significant progress in legal rights, little has changed in public perception. “Our rights on paper have become a ‘gunny bag’ left in a corner. We are still viewed with suspicion and inferiority,” Padmashali stated. The campaign aims to promote a culture of connection and love, distancing itself from negative stereotypes often associated with the community.
The campaign also acknowledges the complex issues within the community. Padmashali and fellow activist Rumi Harish addressed concerns regarding public nuisance and the behavior of some individuals. They argued that these isolated incidents should not define the entire community, pointing out the systemic violence and discrimination they face. “When crimes are committed by the majority, the entire gender is not blamed. Our community’s actions are hyper highlighted because we are few,” Padmashali remarked, advocating for a “politics of love” rather than hostility.
The campaign has garnered support from the Karnataka State Gender and Sexual Minorities Coalition, and senior officials, including Dayanand, the Additional Director General of Police (Training), and K Vidyakumari, an IAS officer, are expected to participate in the launch. The initiative aims not just to change minds but to create an environment where love and acceptance replace fear and prejudice.
By addressing these crucial issues, Ondede hopes to dismantle the barriers that hinder social acceptance and pave the way for a more inclusive society in Bengaluru and beyond.
