In a significant tribute to women’s cricket, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) inaugurated a stand in honour of Indian cricket team’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium on October 12, 2023. This event not only commemorated Kaur’s achievements but also marked a historic moment for women’s sports in India.

Inauguration Ceremony Highlights

The inauguration ceremony featured notable figures, including Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and PCA President Amarjit Mehta. The event also saw the unveiling of another stand named after celebrated former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh. The attendance of Mithun Manhas, President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and Gulab Chand Kataria, Punjab Governor, underscored the importance of the occasion.

Following the ceremony, the BCCI shared a video on social media capturing the highlights of the event. In a heartfelt message on her Instagram story, Smriti Mandhana congratulated Kaur, stating, “Congratulations @imharmanpreet_kaur!! What a day for women’s cricket and so so proud of you!”

Kaur Reflects on Her Journey

During the ceremony, Kaur expressed her gratitude and emotions regarding the honour. “After winning the World Cup, a lot of things have changed in my life. But I think this is a special moment for me,” she remarked. “The soil on which I started playing—today I will finally have a stand in my name. So I think it is a very proud moment for me, and I really want to thank the Punjab Cricket Association for that.”

Kaur further added, “All the hard work, all the struggle, has paid off today. So I think it is a very emotional moment for me. But also, whoever is going to watch this video, whoever is listening, I think it is going to be very motivational for all of them.”

This recognition not only celebrates Kaur’s individual accomplishments but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring female cricketers across the nation. The establishment of a stand bearing her name at such a prominent venue highlights the growing recognition of women’s contributions to the sport.

The PCA’s initiative reflects a broader commitment to promoting women’s cricket and providing role models for future generations. As the sport continues to evolve in India, moments like these are pivotal in shaping the landscape for women athletes.

As women’s cricket garners increasing attention, the celebration of players like Harmanpreet Kaur marks a positive shift towards greater visibility and support for female athletes in India and beyond.
