Actor Sarada, renowned for her poignant portrayals of tragic characters, has been awarded the 32nd JC Daniel Award, the highest recognition for contributions to cinema from the government of Kerala. The announcement was made on January 16, 2024, by Saji Cherian, the Minister for Cultural Affairs. Born in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Sarada made a significant impact on Malayalam cinema during the 1960s and 70s. She earned the title of “dukhaputhri,” or “Queen of Tragedy,” for her compelling performances. Sarada garnered her first two National Awards for her roles in the films Thulabharam (1968) and Swayamvaram (1972), where she depicted a desperate mother and a newly-wed woman facing adversity, respectively. Her third National Award was for the Telugu film Nimajjanam in 1977.
Throughout her illustrious career, Sarada portrayed memorable characters in films such as Udhyogastha, Inapravukal, Thriveni, Kattu Thulasi, Iruttinte Athmavu, and Sakunthala. In recent years, she continued to shine with notable roles in films like Oru Minnaminunginte Nurunguvettam and Nayika.
In 2017, Sarada became a member of the Hema Committee, established by the government to address issues facing women in Malayalam cinema. Collaborating with Justice Hema and retired civil servant KB Vatsala Kumari, she contributed to a report that has been pivotal in shaping the future of the industry.
The committee responsible for conferring the JC Daniel Award to Sarada includes esteemed figures such as veteran filmmaker and lyricist Sreekumaran Thampi, actor Urvashi, filmmaker Balu Kiriyath, and C Ajoy, secretary of the Chalachitra Academy. The award ceremony promises to be a celebration of Sarada’s impactful contributions to the world of cinema.
