Renowned Sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar Dies at Age 100

Renowned Indian sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar passed away on March 14, 2024, at his home in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. He was 100 years old and had been experiencing age-related health issues. Sutar was celebrated for designing the Statue of Unity, the tallest statue in the world, located in Gujarat. His artistic legacy also includes significant works like the statues of Mahatma Gandhi in a meditative pose and Chhatrapati Shivaji riding a horse, both situated in front of the Indian Parliament.

Sutar’s contributions to art were recognized with multiple prestigious awards. He received the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his outstanding achievements in sculpture. Most recently, he was honored with the Maharashtra Bhushan Puraskar, the highest award conferred by the state of Maharashtra.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, calling Sutar a remarkable sculptor. Modi highlighted that Sutar’s mastery has given India some of its most iconic landmarks, emphasizing the enduring significance of the Statue of Unity in Kevadia. The Prime Minister remarked that Sutar’s works will continue to inspire both artists and citizens as powerful expressions of India’s history and culture.

Born in Dhule district, Maharashtra, in 1925, Sutar was a distinguished alumnus of the J. J. School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai, where he graduated as a gold medallist. His artistic journey not only included creating monumental sculptures but also engaging in the restoration of historical sites, such as the famous Ajanta and Ellora caves.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his sorrow over Sutar’s passing, describing it as an irreparable loss to Indian art. In a social media post, Shah noted Sutar’s crucial role in preserving India’s cultural heritage, stating that his historical sculptures have etched Indian culture in the memories of the younger generation.

As the art community mourns the loss of Ram Vanji Sutar, his legacy remains a testament to the skill and vision that shaped India’s sculptural landscape. His contributions will be remembered for generations, underscoring the profound impact one individual can have on a nation’s artistic identity.
