Poetic Event Celebrates Community with School Supplies in Mangaluru

A vibrant celebration took place on December 16, 2023, at the Little Flower Higher Primary School in Bajpe, Mangaluru, where the 47th Poetica Kavigoshthi and a distribution program of essential supplies for students were held. The event featured the distribution of shoes, socks, and toys aimed at enhancing the educational experience for children in the community.

The program commenced with a heartfelt prayer song, followed by a welcome dance performed by the students, setting a joyful tone for the day. Sr Flavia Wilma, counsellor to the provincial superior of the Bethany Institution, presided over the event, while Sr Lilly D’Souza, the superior of the local convent, attended as the chief guest. In her opening remarks, the headmistress, Delsy D’Souza, warmly welcomed all attendees and highlighted the significance of community support in education.

Objectives and Contributions of Poetica

The event was inaugurated with a traditional lighting of the lamp. Naveen Pereira, chief of Poetica, elaborated on the objectives of the program in his introductory address. He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in fostering a supportive environment for students. During the ceremony, dignitaries symbolically distributed shoes and socks to several children, illustrating their commitment to enhancing students’ lives.

As a gesture of appreciation, Delsy D’Souza presented rose saplings to all guests, further enhancing the event’s spirit of giving. In her presidential address, Sr Flavia Wilma praised the activities of Poetica and extended her best wishes for their future endeavors. The sentiments of the students were shared by Kumari Misri, who articulated her gratitude on behalf of her peers.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Shweta D’Silva, an assistant teacher at the school, and was compered by Anita Saldanha, also an assistant teacher.

Poetic Performances and Community Joy

The literary component of the event saw a diverse group of poets take the stage. Poets such as Edward Lobo from Thokkottu, Hussain Katipalla, Stanislaus D’Souza from Kirem, Juliette Moras from Derebail, Irene Mendonca from Cascia, and Naveen Pereira recited their works, enriching the cultural experience of the event. Notably, Edward Lobo also entertained the audience with his mimicry skills.

The distribution of shoes, socks, and toys brought immense joy to the children, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the school. The event not only provided essential items but also fostered a sense of community and support among students and their families.
