NDMC Opens Night Shelters in Community Halls for the Needy

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has transformed its Barat Ghars and community halls into night shelters for those in need. This initiative, announced by NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal on Saturday, aims to provide safe refuge for patients and their attendants visiting major hospitals in the city.

Details of the Night Shelter Initiative

In compliance with directives from the High Court, the NDMC is making these facilities available for individuals requiring medical treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, and Lady Harding Hospital. Chahal emphasized that only those community halls and Barat Ghars without prior bookings will be utilized, ensuring that the general public is not inconvenienced.

The selection of locations has been carefully assessed to maximize availability while providing safe shelter for the needy. A special team comprising senior NDMC officers has been formed to oversee the initiative, ensuring smooth operations and essential facilities are consistently available at the shelters.

Collaboration with DUSIB and Implementation Strategy

Under this arrangement, the NDMC is responsible for providing space, water, and electricity, while the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) supplies beds and other essential items. Chahal reported that the NDMC Community Hall in Kidwai Nagar has already been designated as a night shelter for homeless individuals rescued from the AIIMS area. The process of relocating homeless persons from the AIIMS subway and its surroundings to the shelter is currently ongoing.

The initiative is scheduled to last until March 15, 2024. Chahal noted that the primary goal is to protect vulnerable individuals from harsh weather conditions, ensuring they do not have to endure the elements and are provided with safe, dignified shelter.

Chahal reiterated that such initiatives align with the humane and welfare-oriented vision of the Prime Minister and highlighted the NDMC’s commitment to supporting the weaker sections of society. As the project progresses, ongoing monitoring will ensure that the needs of beneficiaries are met effectively, reflecting the NDMC’s dedication to community welfare.
