Mumbai Officer Honoured for Cracking Major E-Ticket Fraud Case
A Sub-Inspector from the Mumbai Division of Central Railway, Gopalkrishna Rai, received the esteemed Railway Minister’s Medal for Best Investigation on Monday for his pivotal role in dismantling a significant e-ticket touting syndicate. The award was presented by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a ceremony held in Valsad, Gujarat.
Rai, who is stationed at the IT Cell in Wadi Bunder, Mumbai, spearheaded an investigation into a group illegally booking IRCTC e-tickets using NEXUS software. His diligent efforts led to the arrest of 16 individuals, which included one “super seller,” two sellers, and thirteen users. The case was originally filed at Bhiwandi Road, highlighting the widespread issue of ticket fraud.
To uncover the scope of the illegal activities, Rai utilized advanced tools such as PRABAL Data. This analysis revealed 23 suspicious bank accounts linked to the syndicate. His team identified 234 e-tickets that had already been used, valued at Rs 4,85,544, along with 94 active or upcoming journey tickets worth Rs 2,20,397. The investigation also uncovered the misuse of five IRCTC agent IDs and 684 personal user IDs, alongside 193 suspect leads circulating across various railway zones.
The successful operation not only dismantled a key player in the illegal railway ticketing network in Mumbai but also underscored the escalating misuse of digital platforms for ticket fraud. The Railway Ministry commended Rai’s technical skills and unwavering commitment to safeguarding passenger interests.
Rai’s achievement serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by authorities in combating digital fraud. The crackdown signals a significant step towards enhancing the integrity of railway ticketing systems and protecting the rights of legitimate passengers.
