Modi Government Clarifies Misleading Claims on Tax Department Access
Rumors circulating on social media regarding the Income Tax Department’s potential access to taxpayers’ bank accounts, emails, and social media accounts have prompted a formal clarification from the Government of India. The government stated that these claims, linked to the upcoming Income Tax Act, 2025, are misleading and incorrect.
The speculation gained traction after a post by the account @IndianTechGuide suggested that starting on April 1, 2026, the Income Tax Department would have the authority to monitor various digital platforms to combat tax evasion. In response, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check team issued a statement categorically denying the accuracy of these assertions.
In their clarification, the PIB emphasized that the provisions outlined in Section 247 of the Income Tax Act, 2025, are specifically limited to formal search and survey operations. The department does not possess the right to access private digital spaces unless there is substantial evidence of large-scale tax evasion.
The PIB’s statement highlighted that the proposed measures are designed exclusively to target illicit financial activities and should not be misconstrued as a blanket surveillance tool for ordinary citizens. The additional powers granted under this act cannot be utilized for general information gathering or for cases not under formal investigation.
Taxpayers can rest assured that their personal digital communications remain private unless directly implicated in significant tax evasion activities. This clarification aims to alleviate concerns among citizens regarding government overreach into their private lives.
The government has consistently maintained that the measures are aimed at combating black money and enhancing compliance with tax regulations without infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens. As the implementation date approaches, authorities are keen to dispel any misconceptions that could lead to unnecessary panic.
In light of these developments, taxpayers are encouraged to stay informed through official channels to avoid falling victim to misinformation. The PIB Fact Check initiative continues to play a vital role in verifying claims related to government policies, ensuring that the public receives accurate information.
As discussions around tax compliance evolve, maintaining transparency and trust between citizens and authorities remains paramount. The government’s swift response to these rumors illustrates its commitment to clarity and public assurance in the face of misleading claims.
