Understanding the Kumari Tradition
The Kumari tradition, deeply rooted in Nepali culture, involves the veneration of a prepubescent girl as the Living Goddess. This practice is believed to symbolize the physical embodiment of the goddess Taleju, a form of the goddess Durga. The tradition dates back to the Malla dynasty, which spanned from the 12th to the 18th century. Koirala’s visit highlights the cultural significance of this revered practice and its enduring influence in Nepal.
