Manika Vishwakarma, the reigning Miss India, showcased a stunning national costume titled “The Birth of Enlightenment” at the Miss Universe 2025 pageant. This ensemble pays tribute to India’s cultural heritage and the profound spiritual moment of Buddha’s enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. The event is taking place in Thailand, where Vishwakarma is competing against over 130 contestants from around the world.

Symbolism and Design

The 22-year-old model has captivated audiences both on stage and through her social media platforms with a series of remarkable costumes. Each piece reflects her rich heritage and the artistry of Indian fashion. Vishwakarma’s latest attire is a gold gown that embodies elegance and cultural significance.

As she walked the stage, the host narrated, “This look honours the sacred moment when the Buddha attains enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Honouring a profound spiritual event, let me present India.” The gown’s design featured voluminous layers with intricate embroidery, blending traditional Indian aesthetics with modern glamour.

The costume is not only visually striking but also rich in symbolism. In a social media video, Vishwakarma explained, “The ensemble is crafted in regal gold and saffron hues, symbolising divinity, purity, and the eternal light of knowledge.” The design draws inspiration from ancient temple architecture, resembling the golden spires and stupas found in Buddhist monasteries in Sanchi and Bodh Gaya.

Elements of Spirituality

Central to the costume is the Dharma Chakra, or Wheel of Truth, which represents the cycle of life and the moral law. The illuminated emblem signifies the Eightfold Path, a core aspect of Buddhist philosophy. The flowing saffron train pays homage to the robes worn by monks, who promote Buddha’s teachings of compassion and mindfulness.

Vishwakarma’s headpiece, inspired by temple spires (Shikharas), is adorned with a lotus bloom—a symbol of purity that emerges from the earth yet remains untarnished by it. This thoughtful design incorporates multiple elements of Indian culture and spirituality, enhancing the overall impact of her presentation.

The 74th Miss Universe ceremony will take place on November 21, 2025, at the Impact Challenger Hall in Pak Kret, Nonthaburi, Thailand.
