Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya led the first anniversary celebrations of the ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ initiative in Puducherry on December 21, 2025. The event attracted over 1,500 participants, marking a significant milestone for a program that has engaged more than 20 lakh individuals across 2 lakh locations since its inception.

The vibrant gathering at Rock Beach showcased the growing popularity of cycling as a fitness activity. Participants included school students, members of NaMo Cycling Clubs, and students from Puducherry University. Notable athletes, including Padma Bhushan and Khel Ratna awardees PR Sreejesh and Sharath Kamal, joined the ride, inspiring attendees to embrace an active lifestyle.

From Humble Beginnings to a Nationwide Movement

Mandaviya reflected on the journey of the initiative, stating, “When we started this initiative a year ago, it was organised at just five locations with about 500 participants. Today, more than 10,000 locations across the country take part every Sunday, with over 10 lakh citizens joining regularly.” He emphasized the movement’s role in combating pollution and promoting fitness, aligning with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, K. Kailashnathan, highlighted the initiative’s positive environmental impact. He shared an anecdote about his village in Gujarat, where cycling is the preferred mode of transport, illustrating how small lifestyle changes can significantly reduce carbon footprints. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy praised the movement for making fitness accessible, noting that cycling is one of the simplest and most effective ways to maintain health.

Expanding Reach and Initiatives

The anniversary event coincided with simultaneous celebrations in over 10,000 locations across India. The Sports Authority of India and Khelo India centres played a crucial role in organizing these events in diverse places, including Hazaribagh, Kargil, and Visakhapatnam. The initiative has gained momentum with support from various banks as special partners, further enhancing nationwide participation.

During the Puducherry event, the long-awaited Fit India Mobile App was launched, introducing a carbon credit incentivization program for cycling enthusiasts. Cyclists who earned the highest carbon credits, including Bharatbhai Parmar, Shashikant Veerkar, and Govind Singh, were recognized for their contributions. Mandaviya announced that citizens could earn and redeem carbon credits through their cycling efforts, encouraging a shift towards more sustainable commuting habits.

The event also recognized Fit India ambassadors and influencers who have championed the cause of cycling, including Nidhi Nigam and Aishwarya Raj, among others.

In closing, PR Sreejesh encapsulated the essence of the movement, stating, “Being fit is not about training for medals alone; it is about building discipline and balance in everyday life.” As participants rode along the scenic coastline, the anniversary celebration reinforced the message that ‘Sundays on Cycle’ has evolved from a singular event into a nationwide culture promoting fitness, sustainability, and community involvement in India.
