Garuda Purana Outlines Four Sacred Objects for Afterlife Journey
The ancient text known as the Garuda Purana provides significant insights into the Hindu understanding of the afterlife, particularly regarding the journey of the soul at the time of death. This scripture outlines four sacred objects that, when present, are believed to facilitate the entry of the soul into heaven, or Swarg.
According to the teachings of Lord Vishnu, the first of these holy items is the Tulsi plant. Revered as a goddess within Hinduism, the presence of a Tulsi leaf—either placed in the mouth of the dying individual or kept nearby—ensures their immediate salvation. The belief is that the Yamadoots, or messengers of death, will not approach anyone who passes away with Tulsi in their vicinity, thereby assuring a tranquil journey to the divine realm of Vaikuntha.
The second crucial item is Gangajal, the sacred water from the Ganges River. Traditionally, a few drops of this water are administered to the dying person, symbolizing the purification of the soul and creating a pathway to heaven, even in the absence of other rituals. This practice has been upheld for centuries and is considered a vital part of the dying process in Hindu culture.
Significance of Kusha Grass and Sesame Seeds
The third essential object mentioned in the Garuda Purana is Kusha grass. This sacred grass is commonly used in various rituals and is believed to assist in the soul’s detachment from the body during the death process. Laying the dying person on a mat made of Kusha grass is thought to alleviate suffering and shield the soul from negative influences as it transitions from the physical realm.
Lastly, sesame seeds, known as Til in Vedic traditions, hold significant importance. Providing these seeds or having them nearby at the time of death is believed to aid in liberating the soul from its sins and karma, ensuring a smooth passage to the afterlife. This act is said to prevent the soul from facing torment in hell, facilitating a peaceful journey beyond.
These four elements—Tulsi, Gangajal, Kusha, and sesame seeds—are emphasized by Lord Vishnu as crucial means for attaining Swarg and avoiding the repercussions of negative actions in life. The teachings of the Garuda Purana continue to hold relevance in contemporary Hindu practices, offering comfort and guidance to families during the profound moments surrounding death.
