Diaspora Groups Urge PM Modi to Launch Amritsar-Nanded Flight
On February 9, 2026, a coalition of diaspora and civil society groups reached out to Indian Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, requesting the urgent establishment of a direct flight between the holy cities of Amritsar and Nanded. This appeal comes as communities prepare to mark the significant 350th Martyrdom Anniversary of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji.
Coalition of Organizations Unite for Direct Flight
The joint representation was signed by leaders from the FlyAmritsar Initiative (FAI), Amritsar Vikas Manch (AVM), the Guru Ram Das Foundation based in the USA, and SEVA Trust UK. The signatories include Manmohan Singh Brar, Anantdeep Singh Dhillon, Sameep Singh Gumtala, Bhai Sawinder Singh, and Charan Kanwal Singh Sekhon MBE. Their unified voice represents the global Sikh and Punjabi diaspora, emphasizing the need for improved travel options between these two key spiritual sites.
In their letter, the organizations acknowledged the progress made in air connectivity in Punjab during the Prime Minister’s administration. They highlighted the ongoing international routes such as Amritsar–London and Amritsar–Birmingham, as well as the expansion of domestic routes under the UDAN scheme.
Spiritual Significance and Urgency of the Request
The proposed flight is deemed crucial for connecting two prominent Takhts of Sikhism: Sri Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar and Takht Sri Abchalnagar Hazur Sahib in Nanded. Currently, pilgrims, particularly senior citizens, encounter substantial difficulties due to the absence of direct flights. The demand for this route has intensified as devotees prepare for the 350th Martyrdom Anniversary, with many planning to travel to Nanded to pay their respects.
During a rally in Maharashtra in November 2024, Prime Minister Modi had assured the Sikh community of the commencement of flights between Nanded and Amritsar, which sparked hope among devotees worldwide. The coalition has urged the Prime Minister to fulfill this promise, as many pilgrims are expected to visit during this commemorative year.
In addition to appealing to the Prime Minister, the AVM and its partners have reached out to Sh. Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, expressing appreciation for the state’s role in organizing the anniversary events. They have requested support in coordinating with the Ministry of Civil Aviation to expedite the establishment of this vital route.
The organizations believe that even an initial service under the UDAN scheme would significantly alleviate travel challenges for pilgrims and reinforce cultural ties between Punjab and Maharashtra. They have also sent copies of their request to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Airports Authority of India, and the National Commission for Minorities, seeking broader institutional backing.
Furthermore, the coalition has solicited support from the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and the Jathedar of Takht Sri Hazur Sahib, alongside other Sikh institutions and community leaders, underscoring the spiritual importance of direct air connectivity for the Sikh faith.
This collective effort reflects the determination of the Sikh community to enhance travel options for devotees, ensuring greater accessibility to their sacred sites during a momentous year of remembrance.
