Colvale Jail Inmate Rohan Dhungat Wins National Painting Award

Rohan Dhungat, an inmate at the Central Jail in Colvale, has garnered national recognition by winning third prize in the painting category at the inaugural Tinka Tinka India Awards. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the jail, which participated in the awards for the first time. The event aims to celebrate the creative talents of prison inmates across India.

Dhungat was among 18 inmates selected nationwide to compete in the awards, which included categories for Painting, Special Mention, and Bandini. Sucheta Dessai, the Superintendent of Central Jail, expressed pride in Dhungat’s accomplishment, emphasizing the positive example he has set for fellow inmates. “He completed the painting in one night after we learned about the competition at the last moment,” Dessai noted. “We are thrilled that he won a national award.”

Art as a Path to Rehabilitation

The jail authorities view participation in such awards as part of broader efforts to reform and rehabilitate prisoners by acknowledging their artistic talents. Dhungat’s painting portrays a solitary inmate seated on the floor of a dimly lit space reminiscent of a prison cell. The artwork features a floor pattern resembling piano keys, with alternating black and white shades symbolizing the stark contrast between freedom and confinement.

Notably, a bird perched on the windowsill in the painting symbolizes hope, while a distant city skyline beyond the bars reflects the longing for life outside prison walls. Dhungat has also displayed his work at an exhibition, further showcasing his artistic skills.

A Journey of Education and Personal Growth

Since his incarceration in 2006, Dhungat has dedicated himself to education. He has completed a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, a Postgraduate Diploma in Labour and Administrative Law, and has pursued an LLB and LLM. Additionally, he has obtained postgraduate degrees in Journalism and Mass Communication and NGO Management from Goa University.

The Tinka Tinka Foundation, a public charitable trust focused on prison reforms, organizes the Tinka Tinka India Awards. These awards stand out as the only national recognition for the creative contributions of prison inmates and staff, highlighting the potential for personal transformation through art.
