Christians in Mumbai are celebrating the annual ‘Week of Prayer for Christian Unity’ with various denominations participating in joint prayer services. From January 18 to 24, 2024, churches across the city are coming together to foster a spirit of unity and collaboration among different Christian traditions.

On the evening of January 24, St Andrew’s Church in Bandra, a Roman Catholic establishment founded in 1575 CE, hosted a special prayer service attended by members of St Stephen’s Church, which is part of the Church of North India and was established in 1845 CE. This gathering exemplifies the communal effort to strengthen bonds among Christians in the region.

In a reciprocal gesture of unity, St Stephen’s Church has invited members of St Andrew’s Church to participate in their prayer service on the morning of January 25. This initiative is part of a broader commitment by local churches to enhance inter-denominational relationships.

Father Nigel Barrett, the spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Bombay and parish priest at St Andrew’s Church, emphasized the importance of this week, stating, “As the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity unfolds, the Archdiocese of Bombay joins Christians worldwide in reflecting on our shared journey towards greater communion.” He added that Christians are united through their common baptism and the call to love one another, expressing hope for unity that transcends differences.

This sacred octave serves as a reminder that while theological differences exist, they are overshadowed by the shared faith that connects believers. “We pray for the healing of wounds and the building of bridges, embodying the unity for which Christ prayed,” Barrett noted.

Participation from the Protestant community is also significant. Reverend Thomas Jacob, the former Presbyter-in-charge of St Stephen’s Church, remarked that inter-denominational prayers reflect ongoing efforts by churches to unite. Members of Protestant congregations have attended parish council meetings held by Catholic churches in the vicinity, such as St Peter’s.

“I think it is good to have such services in light of the socio-political context,” Jacob stated. “It is good to be united. We may have theological differences but share common ground. More needs to be done than just a few religious services in a year.”

On the evening of January 24, Reverend John Roland of St Stephen’s Church joined Barrett along with members from both congregations. The joint participation highlighted the spirit of fellowship and collective faith that defines this week of prayer.

David Vaz, a media consultant, commented on the significance of the gathering, stating, “Their presence together underscores the spirit of Christian unity and shared commitment to prayer and fellowship.” He emphasized that this initiative reflects the core message of the ‘Week of Prayer for Christian Unity’—that despite diverse traditions, Christians remain united in faith, prayer, and service.

Through these shared worship experiences, the Christian community in Mumbai is taking meaningful steps towards unity, demonstrating their commitment to fostering relationships that transcend denominational boundaries.
