Bharath Arts Academy Sets Guinness Record with 5,000 Dancers
Hyderabad witnessed a remarkable cultural achievement as the Bharath Arts Academy set a new Guinness World Record for the largest Kuchipudi dance lesson. On March 16, 2024, approximately 5,000 performers from various countries gathered at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Gachibowli to participate in this extraordinary event. The performance featured pre-recorded music, including the Kedara Gaura Tillana, a ten-minute composition by Kala Ratna Pasumarthi Venkateswara Sarma.
This event, named Kuchipudi Kala Vaibhavam 2, was organized in collaboration with the Telangana government and surpassed the previous record set by the academy itself in 2023, which had featured 4,000 participants. “This is our second attempt to register in the Guinness World Records. Previously, we successfully achieved this on December 24, 2023, and this time, we aimed to set the record for the largest Kuchipudi dance lesson,” explained Vasudha Kadiri, one of the event’s organizers.
Planning for the event commenced nine months prior, with participants dedicating two months to intensive practice. Dancers hailed from countries including the USA, UK, UAE, and Australia, alongside various Indian cities such as Mumbai, Raipur, Bengaluru, and Chennai. This international participation highlighted the global appeal of Kuchipudi, a classical Indian dance form.
To ensure proper documentation of the record, the organizers implemented a verification system using QR codes, which performers scanned, allowing adjudicators to confirm their participation. The event was graced by notable attendees, including Vakiti Srihari, the state sports minister, and Shiva Sena Reddy, chairman of the Sports Authority. Both officials expressed their support and admiration for the participants’ efforts to achieve this significant milestone.
The achievement not only celebrates the rich tradition of Kuchipudi but also showcases the unifying power of dance, bringing together thousands of individuals from diverse backgrounds in a shared cultural experience. The success of this event reinforces the importance of community and collaboration in promoting the arts on a global scale.
