Ancient Butter Ritual Launches Mahashivratri Festivities in Mandi

The sacred ritual of Ghrit Mandal was performed at the Baba Bhootnath Temple in Mandi on March 11, 2024, officially marking the beginning of the Mahashivratri festival celebrations. This time-honored tradition involves covering the Shivlingam with a specially prepared mantle of 21 kilograms of pure butter, meticulously shaped into a symbolic mandala.

With the Ghrit Mandal ritual, the series of religious observances linked to Mahashivratri has commenced in Mandi, often referred to as the ‘Chhoti Kashi’. Celebrated on the Chaturdashi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Falgun, Mahashivratri holds significant importance for devotees of Lord Shiva. During this month-long period, the Shivlingam will remain adorned with the butter mantle, and devotees will refrain from performing Jalabhishek, a traditional water offering.

On the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri, the Shivlingam will revert to its original state. Adding to the spiritual fervor, a grand deity fair is scheduled for February 16, 2024, drawing participants from various regions.

The Ghrit Mandal ritual, practiced for centuries, symbolizes the warmth and devotion of devotees towards Lord Shiva during the cold winter months. By enveloping the deity in a ‘butter blanket’, worshippers express their reverence and commitment.
