Amit Shah Leads Northern Zonal Council Meeting in Faridabad
Union Home Minister Amit Shah presided over the 32nd Northern Zonal Council meeting in Faridabad on March 4, 2024. Leaders from eight states and Union Territories (UTs) gathered to address pressing issues, including women’s safety and rural banking, while also honoring the victims of the November 10, 2023, car blast in Delhi. The meeting commenced with a two-minute silence, reflecting a somber recognition of the tragedy.
The Council meeting was attended by Chief Ministers from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan, along with the Lieutenant Governors and Administrators of Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Chandigarh. Senior officials from the central and state governments participated, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the discussions.
Key Issues Addressed
Among the critical topics on the agenda were the rapid investigation of sexual offenses against women and children, as well as the implementation of Fast Track Special Courts (FTSC) to expedite these cases. The participants also discussed the introduction of brick-and-mortar banking facilities in every village, aimed at enhancing financial accessibility.
Additionally, the meeting focused on the implementation of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112), aiming to improve emergency services across the region. Various regional issues were also explored, including initiatives to strengthen nutrition, education, health, electricity, urban planning, and cooperative systems.
The Role of Zonal Councils
Amit Shah serves as the chairperson of the Northern Zonal Council, while the Chief Minister of Haryana takes on the role of vice-chairperson. This meeting was organized by the Inter-State Council Secretariat of the Ministry of Home Affairs, with the Haryana government hosting the event. The Zonal Councils were established under the States Reorganisation Act of 1956 to facilitate dialogue and cooperation among member states.
Each Zonal Council includes a permanent committee formed at the Chief Secretaries level, which discusses issues proposed by the states before they reach the Zonal Council for further deliberation. This structure allows for a focused approach to addressing matters that impact multiple states or the relationship between the central government and the states.
Over the past eleven years, a total of 63 meetings of the various Zonal Councils and their permanent committees have been held. The councils play a vital role in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation across various sectors, reinforcing the belief that strong states contribute to a strong nation.
The outcomes of this latest meeting reflect ongoing efforts to enhance governance and address the challenges faced by the region, furthering the cooperative spirit that characterizes the Zonal Councils.
