Karnataka Initiates Statewide Polio Vaccination for 6.2 Million Children
The Karnataka government has launched a comprehensive polio vaccination drive, aiming to immunize over 62.4 lakh children under the age of five. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the initiative on December 22, 2023, by administering polio drops at his official residence. The campaign, which runs until December 24, is part of an extensive effort to achieve complete vaccination coverage across the state.
During the launch event, Dinesh Gundu Rao, the state’s Health Minister, emphasized the importance of the vaccination, reassuring parents about the safety of the polio drops. “These two drops are extremely important. Every child must receive them without fail,” he stated. The drive is structured as a door-to-door campaign, ensuring that children receive the vaccine in their homes and local communities.
Extensive Logistics and Resources Deployed
To facilitate this extensive vaccination effort, the Karnataka government has mobilized significant resources. A total of 33,258 booths have been established, supported by 1,030 mobile teams, 1,096 transit teams, and 113,115 vaccination workers along with 7,322 supervisors. This well-organized approach aims to ensure efficient delivery of the vaccine across urban and rural areas.
In addition to physical vaccination sites, the government has introduced the ‘Nearby Vaccination Centre Karnataka’ app. This tool allows parents to easily locate the nearest vaccination center, thereby streamlining the process and encouraging participation. In Bengaluru, local commissioners have also launched the drive within their respective jurisdictions, utilizing urban primary health centers, schools, and anganwadi centers as vaccination points.
Mobile teams have been strategically deployed to high-traffic areas such as bus stands and metro stations, enhancing accessibility for families. Parents have reported positive experiences at vaccination centers, noting the quick service provided. “We finished the process in just five minutes for our child,” said Parvathi Arun from Nayandahalli, highlighting the efficiency of the initiative.
Impressive Early Results
On the first day of the campaign, over 10,77,134 children were vaccinated, achieving approximately 95% of the target for that day. The West Corporation in Bengaluru recorded the highest number of vaccinations, reaching 2,39,079 children under five years of age.
Overall, the Karnataka government’s ambitious vaccination drive reflects its commitment to eradicating polio and safeguarding the health of its youngest citizens. With robust logistical planning and community engagement, the initiative is positioned to make a significant impact in the fight against polio in the state.
