The Karnataka Cabinet has approved a series of significant proposals aimed at enhancing public infrastructure and welfare across the state. During a press briefing on October 5, 2023, H K Patil, the state’s Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, outlined the decisions made in health, education, drinking water, and agriculture sectors following the Cabinet meeting in Bengaluru.

Key Health Infrastructure Developments

Among the notable approvals is the construction of a new 100-bed facility at a proposed 250-bed district hospital in Kollegala, located in Chamarajanagar district, with an estimated investment of Rs 48 crore. Additionally, the Cabinet sanctioned a revised budget of Rs 150 crore to upgrade the Udupi district hospital to a 250-bed facility.

Other health initiatives include the approval for a 100-bed taluk hospital in Malur, Kolar district, at a cost of Rs 41 crore, as well as a 300-bed teaching hospital in Puttur, Dakshina Kannada, with an estimated budget of Rs 180 crore.

Enhancements in Education and Agriculture

In the education sector, the Cabinet approved the establishment of computer labs in 854 government high schools and KGBV schools under the Samagra Shikshana Karnataka scheme, with an allocated cost of Rs 44.29 crore. This initiative aims to modernize educational resources and improve digital literacy among students.

Turning to agriculture, the Cabinet endorsed the implementation of the Karnataka Raitha Suraksha Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, effective from the 2026–27 period. This scheme is designed to provide comprehensive risk coverage for farmers, offering compensation for crop losses due to natural disasters such as hailstorms and landslides. Minister Patil emphasized that all farmers affected by calamities will receive compensation based on the area impacted.

Water Infrastructure and Administrative Changes

The Cabinet also addressed drinking water needs by approving the Rs 6,939 crore Cauvery Phase VI project, which aims to enhance drinking water supply for Bengaluru and surrounding areas. This project is crucial for meeting the growing demand for water in the region.

Additionally, the Cabinet authorized the construction of a 30 ML capacity RCC reservoir, intended to replace the current dilapidated structure at the Bull Temple reservoir service station in Bengaluru.

Apart from these significant projects, the Cabinet approved various land allotments and exchange proposals put forth by the revenue department. Adjustments to transfer rules in minority welfare services were also part of the decisions made, reflecting the government’s commitment to infrastructure expansion and administrative efficiency.

These initiatives demonstrate the Karnataka government’s focus on improving public welfare through strategic investments in health, education, agriculture, and infrastructure, as outlined by Minister Patil.
