India Sees Surge in Organ Transplants, Deceased Donations Rise
India has experienced a remarkable increase in organ transplantation, with annual procedures rising nearly fourfold over the past decade. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the number of transplants has surged from fewer than 5,000 in 2013 to close to 20,000 expected in 2025. This growth is accompanied by a significant rise in deceased donations, which now account for approximately 18 percent of total transplants in the country.
Key Factors Driving the Increase
The rise in organ transplants is attributed to several factors, including enhanced public awareness, improved medical infrastructure, and more efficient allocation systems. Data from the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) highlights notable advancements in organ donation and transplantation processes across India. Since the introduction of an Aadhaar-based verification system for organ pledging on September 17, 2023, more than 4.8 lakh citizens have registered to donate their organs and tissues after death.
In 2025, over 1,200 families consented to donate the organs of their deceased relatives, significantly impacting the lives of many recipients. Authorities noted that numerous donors are facilitating multi-organ transplants, allowing multiple patients to benefit from a single act of generosity.
India has also developed its expertise in performing complex transplant procedures, including heart, lung, and pancreas transplants. The country is currently a leader in hand transplants, conducting more surgeries in this area than any other nation.
Government Support and Future Goals
Officials attribute this growth to ongoing government support, policy reforms, and an expanding network of skilled transplant surgeons and medical professionals. Outcomes in Indian transplant procedures are now comparable to global standards, often provided at significantly lower costs.
NOTTO has called for increased participation from government institutions, organizations, and workplaces to cultivate a culture of organ and tissue donation. The organization advocates for multi-organ donation as a compassionate choice that can transform personal loss into renewed hope for others.
The advancements in the transplant ecosystem align with India’s broader goal of achieving self-reliance in advanced healthcare. This progress aims to reduce the need for patients to seek overseas procedures while maintaining ethical, transparent, and equitable standards within the country. The growth in organ transplantation reflects a commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for many individuals across India.
