India Faces Urgent Need for Geriatric Care as Elderly Population Surges
India’s elderly population is projected to reach an alarming 230 million by 2036, accounting for nearly 15% of the nation’s total demographic. This significant increase underscores an urgent need for a shift in geriatric care policies, as highlighted in a recent episode of Health 360. Experts argue that prioritizing geriatric care should be a primary public health concern.
Reports from the Delhi Elder Friendly Initiative indicate that approximately 86% of elderly residents in the capital lack digital literacy. This digital divide severely restricts their access to essential healthcare services and online resources. In a similar vein, the Agewell Foundation found that around 85% of seniors in the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi are also digitally illiterate, which contributes to their feelings of social exclusion.
Growing Demand for Senior Living Facilities
As the elderly population continues to grow, so does the demand for senior living facilities. The senior living sector in India is set to expand rapidly, with projections estimating the establishment of 15,000 facilities by 2030. This growth is expected to require an investment of Rs 26,000 crore (approximately USD 3.1 billion). According to a 2024 Knight Frank report, there is a projected need for 20-21 lakh senior housing units by the end of the decade.
Additionally, the episode of Health 360 noted a remarkable four-fold increase in organ transplants in India since 2013, highlighting advancements in medical care alongside the growing need for specialized services for the elderly.
Political and Social Developments
In other news, Sangeetha Sornalingam, wife of Tamil actor and TVK chief Vijay, has filed for divorce in the Chengalpattu family court, citing her husband’s alleged extramarital affair. This personal matter has sparked significant media attention, showcasing the intersection of celebrity and public interest.
In political updates, senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a move that may impact legislative discussions in the region.
Meanwhile, international tensions have escalated as thick smoke enveloped Tehran following Israeli airstrikes described as preemptive measures. These actions come in response to weeks of rising hostilities in the region. Videos from the capital captured residents fleeing as explosions echoed throughout the city. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the operation aimed to eliminate an “existential threat” posed by hostile forces. In retaliation, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard reported launching a series of drones and missiles targeting Israeli positions, including military bases near the border with Pakistan.
The interconnectedness of these issues—from healthcare needs for an ageing population to political and international developments—demonstrates the complexities facing India and the broader region. As the country prepares for a demographic shift, the call for innovative geriatric care solutions becomes increasingly urgent.
