ICAR Training Program Enhances Poultry Farming in Phek

A three-day training program aimed at enhancing poultry farming practices was successfully conducted in Khezhakeno village, Phek, from March 2 to 4, 2024. Organised by the ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, in collaboration with the ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Phek, this initiative focused on empowering local farmers through scientific backyard poultry management.

The training, held under the auspices of ICAR-ATARI, Zone VII, Umiam, began with a welcome address from Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Senior Scientist and Head at IVRI. He underscored the significance of poultry training programs and expressed gratitude for the ongoing support received from ICAR-IVRI in bolstering the poultry sector in the Phek district.

In his address, Dr. M H Khan, Principal Scientist and Head, highlighted the vital role that poultry farming plays in securing rural livelihoods, enhancing nutrition, and promoting the economic development of the farming community. The program featured a series of technical sessions led by experts from ICAR KVK, Phek.

Dr. T Esther Longkumer, Chief Technical Officer in Soil Science, delivered an important lecture on poultry waste management, emphasizing its integration into natural farming systems. Meanwhile, Dr. Hannah K Asangla, Chief Technical Officer in Agronomy, focused on income generation activities within agriculture and allied sectors.

Another key session led by Dr. Harini K R, Subject Matter Specialist in Animal Science, covered various aspects of scientific poultry management. This included critical topics such as feeding and housing management for chicks and layers, hatchery management, disease control, and the value addition and marketing of poultry products.

Additionally, Manjunath K S, Subject Matter Specialist in Horticulture, discussed the importance of protected cultivation of horticultural crops in integrated farming systems.

As part of the hands-on training, participants visited a local poultry farm where they observed a practical demonstration on poultry vaccination. The program also provided farmers with essential inputs, including chicks, poultry feed, drinkers, and feeders.

The training concluded with an interactive session where farmers had the opportunity to engage with scientists, sharing their field-level challenges and experiences related to poultry farming. Certificates of participation were awarded to all trainees, acknowledging their active involvement throughout the program.

In closing, Dr. Harini K R proposed a vote of thanks, recognizing the invaluable contributions of ICAR-IVRI, Bareilly, and appreciating the efforts of all resource persons, organizers, and participating farmers in making the training a success. This initiative not only strengthens the poultry sector but also fosters community development and economic upliftment in the region.
